The Computational Interpretation Group (CIG) is a research group that collaborates with industry, government agencies, and academic institutions to advance research in exploration geophysics, monitoring, and artificial intelligence. Financially supported by global sponsors, our students engage in diverse research topics and have the freedom to choose those that align best with their interests and expertise.

Initially founded for seismic interpretation, CIG has expanded its scope to include computer-assisted processing and interpretation of datasets across diverse fields such as exploration geophysics, well-logging, seismology, planetary science, and oceanography.
For instance (left), we developed softwares that efficiently and accurately interpret critical geologic features of faults, unconformities, horizons, geobodies, and facies in 3D seismic volumes. We further used these features, combined with well-log properties, domain knowledge, and human interactions, to build subsurface models.

We currently focus on AI for geoscience problems:

  • seismic structural interpretation;
  • seismic stratigraphic interpretation;
  • seismic geobody interpretation;
  • reservoir property estimation;
  • seismic facies characterization;
  • subsurface model building;
  • enhanced seismic imaging;
  • geophysical forward modeling and inversion;
  • denoising and super-resolution;
  • borehole and well-log interpretation;
  • geophysical data interpolation;
  • seismic monitoring and location;
  • geologic forward modeling;
